Kathleen has over 29 years of health care experience. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing with honors in 1985 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, after which she practiced nursing until entering law school in 1988. As a nurse, she cared for patients in a variety of settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and ambulatory care facilities. She has cared for patients with severe head trauma and spinal cord injuries, and worked in critical care, post-surgical care, orthopedics, ENT, plastic surgery, ophthalmology and geriatrics. She also managed nursing units and was active in strategic planning for programs and facility development. Kathleen has also practiced law for a number of years in small and large firms in North Carolina specializing in health related litigation including general liability and medical negligence defense, automobile torts, premises liability, insurance contract interpretation, workers compensation, estate administration and products liability. Her undergraduate (BSN – ’85) and graduate degrees (JD – ’91) were completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Alan has over 30 years of health care experience in North Carolina. He has worked in small, medium and large community, governmental, and academic facilities as a clinician, as well as in operations management, business development, strategic planning and marketing. During his career, he has held numerous front line, clinical, managerial and leadership positions within a number of community and regional, tertiary hospitals. In addition to his direct health experience, Alan also has a unique knowledge of community based health care environments and their medical partnerships. He has planned and implemented numerous comprehensive clinical programs which have benefited community providers and their patients. His undergraduate (BSN- 84) and graduate education (MHA-91) were at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Matthew has over 25 years of healthcare experience in North Carolina, having worked for healthcare providers (Duke University Health System) and health insurers (BC/BS, United Healthcare, Cigna, and Coventry Healthcare). His core experiences have primarily revolved around healthcare financing and contracting. He has worked in the medical communities of nearly every county in the state, negotiating principled financial contracts for health plans with hospitals, physicians, and ancillary health care providers. In the insurance industry, he has also been extensively involved in business planning, performance reporting, and design and implementation of contract compliance and monitoring programs. He also held roles responsible of regulatory compliance in financial and operational settings, including development of internal controls and financial/operational compliance programs (Sarbanes-Oxley and NC DOI regulations). His experience in academic medicine focused on clinical service program development and business planning for the Health System. His undergraduate (BA – ’87) was obtained at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his graduate education (MA-’90) was at the University of Florida.
